BASF forms new global team for automotive leather

Some weeks ago 25 BASF leather chemicals technicians based in different parts of the world gathered in Germany for a three-day workshop on automotive leather. BASF has formed the group of technicians into a global industry management team that will focus on automotive leather.

This set-up will allow BASF to build closer collaboration and increase the sharing of insights across different business units, the company said. This will result in a more integrated solution for tanners producing leather for the automotive industry. An example of the specific challenges the team will take on immediately is that of meeting increasingly stringent requirements from automotive companies for eliminating volatile organic compounds from the supply chain.

After the meeting, the new team’s head, Joachim Henkmann, said: “In today’s automotive industry, we see a majority of the finished leather production in Europe and North America, within the vicinity of major car producers. To remain competitive, we need a set-up that mirrors this, allowing us to remain close to car producers and customers. This is why we have our global centre for automotive leather in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with best-in-class laboratory facilities, technical expertise and close network of partners along the value chain.”
