Leather and footwear provide a lift for Spain

April 2013 appears to have been a blip for Spain’s textile and apparel industry. April’s figures showed sales of textiles and garments for the month was up by 7.2% compared to April 2012. It was the first month in many to show a year-on-year increase and the news was welcomed by industry leaders in Spain, which is still firmly in the grip of economic crisis.

However, May’s figures showed a downturn again, a fall in the value of sales of clothing and textiles by Spanish firms of 3.5% compared to May 2012.

The situation in the country’s leather and footwear industry is different. Sales of leather and footwear rose in April 2013 by 13.4% compared to the same month in 2012, and May brought an increase too, of 5.5%.
