Ambitious export hopes for India

India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has said it expects the country’s leather sector to earn export revenues of $14 billion by 2017.

In the most recent fiscal year (April 2012-March 2013), leather-sector export earnings were around $5 billion, a 3% increase on the previous year. However, CLE executive director, Ramesh Kumar, has said he believes this total could reach $14 billion by the end of the five-year plan the Indian government is currently working to in 2017.

“Our strategy includes doubling our existing 1% share of the US market and exploring new markets such as Russia, Japan and Latin America,” he said.
