Ireland up, but beef production declines in the rest of the EU

In comparison to the first three months of 2012, the European Union increased its beef imports in the first quarter of 2013 by 11,000 tonnes, but its internal production of beef over the same period declined by a much higher figure, 94,000 tonnes.

Figures from the European Commission show slaughter weights to be steady in the first quarters of both years, but the numbers for 2013 show declines of 13.5% in production in Italy, of 8.1% in Germany, 8.5% in Belgium, and of 6.6% in France.

Ireland, the largest exporter of beef in the EU, registered an increase in beef production of 4.6%, but the European Commission pointed out that this was on the back of low 2012 figures. Ireland’s beef production for the whole year declined by 9.4% in 2012.
