Spanish town glories in its tanning past

A small city in Castile has inaugurated a special museum exhibition to mark its leather-producing past.

Cuéllar, in the province of Segovia, was an important centre of artisanal leather production between the middle of the seventeenth and the end of the eighteenth century.

The city authorities have renovated one of the ancient tanneries to make the museum exhibit, which will allow visitors and locals to learn about the artisanal production processes Cuéllar’s tanners followed at the time.

Real hides and real tools from the time will be among the exhibits. The hides on show are from an artisanal tannery that is still functioning in the Castilian village of Villarramiel and are believed by experts to be similar to those Cuéllar’s tanners would have produced.
