New covering technique for Singapore Airlines leather upholstery

Creative consultancy DesignworksUSA, a subsidiary of automotive group BMW, has come up with a new design for first-class cabins for Singapore Airlines, which includes a new covering technique for leather upholstery to increase its durability and preserve its look.

The updated design for seats and suites will make its debut in September on board the airline’s new Boeing 777-300ER on selected flights between Singapore and London.

Singapore Airlines said on announcing the development that its aim is to “set new benchmarks” for luxury-class comfort in the skies.

In a statement, DesignworksUSA said its team had taken its cue from automotive interior design for passenger comfort, spatial configuration and functionality. It has imbued the onboard spaces in the first-class cabin with “an aura of tranquillity”, according to the statement, with large surfaces and “elegantly sweeping lines coupled with warm, modern shades of brown within the seating islands [to] evoke the ambience of a living room”.

Each seat in the cabin is lined with fine leather. According to the consultancy, a new covering technique for the upholstery increases tension in the leather, meaning it remains smooth and continue to appear new, even after hours of use.
