Glasgow-based Muirhead Leather has completed comprehensive works to expand its onsite laboratory facilities. The tanning company has now appointed Dr Raymond Gosland, formerly the company’s technical manager, as its new technical director. Dr Gosland will lead the company’s product development, Muirhead said on announcing the development.

With the new laboratory facility complete, Muirhead’s onsite research and development function has tripled in size to accommodate a testing laboratory, new product programmes and a colour studio.

The new laboratory will house ongoing product research programmes into advanced fire retardancy, smoke suppression and lightweight qualities for the company’s aviation customers and other buyers of its leather.

Dr Gosland said: “I am proud to lead Muirhead’s new R&D offensive and believe this investment is a statement of clear intent to build upon and further establish the international standing of this business as a renowned technical leader. I intend to deliver on that promise and build the voice of our customers into all our R&D activities, in terms of quality, performance and environmental systems.”

Muirhead managing director, Colin Wade, added: “The new laboratory is the result of a very significant investment in the future of the business. With the new technology and facilities we have within the lab, and the skills and experience of Raymond as the department’s director, we are perfectly positioned to become the supplier of choice within our key chosen sectors around the world.”
