New low-sulfide unhairing solution from TFL

Two products make up the new package, Pellvit LSS, used to prepare hides in soaking for unhairing, and Erhavit LSU, an enzymatic liming agent that supports the unhairing action of sulfide.
“The use of sulfide for unhairing has always been problematic, but due to a lack of a workable alternative, sulfide has been the preferred way to unhair for more than a century,” TFL said on announcing the development.
Pellvit LSS can be used in the soaking of all kind of hides and skins without having a negative effect on the integrity of bellies and flanks, the chemicals manufacturer said, and can provide “the perfect preconditions” for good hair-root and fine-hair removal, reducing the amount of sulfide tanners would have to use.
For its part, Erhavit LSU weakens the epidermis and the pre-keratin of the hair-root selectively, and promotes the opening-up of the hide-structure and the breakdown of proteoglycans and glycoproteins as well. It supports the removal of fine-hair and hair-roots and is best used in a hair-save formulation, TFL said.
