Raw hides shortage hits Bata

Reports from Ethiopia say shoemaker Bata is aiming to grow production by 20% this year despite being hampered by a shortage of hides.

Its managing director, Luis Pinto, told local press they need 500 hides per day but are getting around 200 per day.

"We are concentrating on producing basic footwear such as farmer shoes, safari shoes and school shoes," he said.

He said the company was trying to pay cash for the hides but still they were not getting them in the right quantity as most of the hides were being exported at the expense of the local industry.
