Turkish footwear industry wants protection against cheap imports

Mr Cetin said that, while Turkish footwear manufacturers earned $552 million in export revenues in 2012, distributors and retailers imported into Turkey footwear with a value of $863 million over the same period. He complained that most of the shoes coming into the country are low-end, low-price sports shoes made from synthetic material.
He said that the low price these shoes are selling for ($5 per pair and less) is harming the domestic industry because footwear manufacturers in Turkey are having to reduce their production levels. He called the competition from importers “unfair” and said the shoes made from synthetic material were “unhygienic”.
