US leathergoods manufacturers ‘focus on top-end’

28/06/2013
Manufacturers of finished leathergoods in the US have seen an annualised growth in revenue of 1.4% from 2009 to the start of 2013 and should see another 2.6% rise to $4.1 billion this year, according to market researcher IBISWorld.

However, imports from China and Vietnam now making up 88.4% of leathergoods bought in the country, it said, and this is set to increase. Companies remaining in the industry have reportedly changed their focus to manufacture at the top end - which would explain the increase in revenues despite declining numbers of manufacturers.

The number of leathergoods manufacturers in the US has fallen at an annualised rate of 1.5%, to 6,503, since 2008.
