Flooding hits Canada’s cattle industry

Record flooding near Calgary has caused players in Canada’s livestock industry to suspend business and has caused an estimated $4.8 billion of damage to homes and offices.

Parts of Calgary are still under water after the Bow and Elbow rivers swelled from record rainfall in the nearby Rocky Mountains, spilling into low-lying communities.

Cargill’s beef-processing plant south of Calgary remained closed yesterday because of a disruption to the fresh-water supply. Cattle slaughter was halted on June 21 and “we aren’t certain when we will be able to start processing again,” Brigitte Burgoyne, a spokeswoman, told Bloomberg.

The plant typically processes 4,500 head of cattle a day. The gross value of livestock from one day of production at the facility is valued at an estimated C$7 million.

“We will assess the situation on a daily basis to determine how soon we can start processing again,” said Ms Burgoyne.

Alberta is home to 40% of Canada' s cattle herds.
