Brazilian beef exports up by more than 20%

Brazilian beef exports for the first five months of 2013 show an increase of more than 20% in volume compared to the same period in 2012.

During the January-May period this year, Brazilian packers exported 562 thousand tonnes of beef, 22.6% more volume than in the first five months of 2012. This brought in revenues of $2.5 billion, a 15% increase on 2012.

Hong Kong was the top importer, buying 142,000 tonnes of Brazilian beef over the five months, an increase of 63%. Russia upped its imports by 10% in volume to reach 132,000 tonnes. These were followed in the top ten importing countries by, in descending order, the European Union, Venezuela and Chile. Egypt and the US came next in terms of value, but Iran imported greater volume than the US over the five-month period. Iranian buyers imported 14,000 tonnes of Brazilian beef over the period, an increase of 198% compared to a year earlier.

Israel and Lebanon completed the top ten.
