Shanghai General Motors is to build a Cadillac plant and a technical automotive centre in Shanghai, costing about 8 billion yuan ($1.3 billion).

The plant has a planned annual production capacity of 160,000 vehicles and will boost the US marque’s footprint in Asia.

Cadillac CEO Daniel Akerson estimated the size of China's auto market will be 30 million vehicles by 2020, 0.1% of which will be luxury cars. Cadillac sales in China are expected to surpass 100,000 units by 2015.

Shanghai GM manufactures and sells Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and Opel in mainland China.
