Registrations dropped 5.9% to 1.08 million vehicles from 1.15 million a year earlier, the lowest for the month since 1993, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
Peugeot, Renault, Fiat and GM’s deliveries fell at least 10% in the region last month as price cuts failed to attract buyers.
BMW, the global leader in luxury car sales, sold 6.6% fewer cars in Europe in May.
However, European group sales at Daimler rose 0.5% as the Mercedes-Benz division, the world’s third-biggest luxury vehicle manufacturer, posted a 2.6% increase.
