CICB announces new certification programme for tanners

17/06/2013
Brazil’s tanning industry association, CICB, has announced that it intends to introduce a new certification programme for Brazilian leather, with the emphasis on sustainability.

CICB said its aim was to give recognition to companies in the tanning sector that offer the best examples of environmental, economic and social sustainability.

Fernando Bello, the organisation’s president, said that he thought the initiative would help Brazil add greater value to its hide resources. He said that Brazil has the biggest commercial cattle herd in the world and is the second-largest producer of hides. However, it’s only in third place in terms of value, Mr Bello said, because too many hides leave Brazil at wet blue stage.

“We need too add more value to our hides to allow us, perhaps, to double our revenues. Italy is a great example of what we can do.”

A consultant who has worked with CICB on devising the new certification programme, Álvaro Flores, said at the time of the announcement that he thought the new sustainability initiative would bring great opportunities for the Brazilian leather sector.
