Chinese investors want access to vegetable tanning agent production

Peru’s supply of tara trees (Caesalpinia spinosa), an important source of vegetable-based tanning agents, is attracting the attention of investors in China.

Reports from the South American country say tara was one of seven products produced in Andean regions of Peru to feature in talks and presentations given by Peruvian exporters in Beijing in mid-June.

Alfonso Velásquez, president of a company called Sierra Exportadora, said specifically that demand for tara was very high.

Tanning agents can be made from a powder produced from the tara tree’s pods.

Reports from Peru say Mr Velásquez and other members of the delegation travelled to Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese government and that the purpose of the talks was to build up trading platforms and co-operation between the two countries.
