Another record month for Brazilian hides

Brazil’s exports of hides and skins for the month of May 2013 showed record amounts for the second consecutive month.

In terms of value, Brazilian tanners and traders exported raw, semi-processed and finished hides worth $229.3 million during May, an increase of 16.8% compared to May 2012 and an increase of 5.0% compared to April 2013.

In the course of the month, the volume of hides exported reached 3.2 million, an increase of 16.9% compared to May 2012.

Cumulative figures for 2013 so far show that hide exports brought in almost $1 billion in the first five months. The exact figure was $984.8 million. This represents a year-on-year increase of 18.9%. In terms of volume, the cumulative total is almost 14.5 million, an increase of 25.3% compared to the first five months of 2012.

Of the hides exported in the first five months of this year, 54.3% were finished, 6.1% crust, 4.5% split, 34.5% wet blue and 0.6% salted.
