US lamb exports up, but Japan remains a closed market
11/06/2013
By the end of April, lamb exports were 3% ahead of last year’s figures in volume, reaching 4,368 tonnes, and 22% in value, bringing in just over $10 million.
For exports to reach their full potential, US lamb needs access to high-value markets such as Japan, USMEF said.
Japan banned US lamb following the BSE outbreak in the US in December 2003 and, despite considerable strides in restoring access for US beef in Japan in recent years, lamb exports remain suspended.
