Vietnam: Footwear association wades into minimum wage debate

03/06/2013
A representative of the Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Association has said that the government's policy of setting varying minimum wage levels is unfair and unreasonable.

Local publication VietNamNet Bridge reported that Ngo Dai Quang has protested over different minimum wage levels across regions and differentiating between public and private employees.

He said the policy was affecting the labour distribution between regions as people move to be in higher paid areas, and that workers’ allowances and benefits are also unfairly distributed.

The country is currently debating the costs, with the definition of minimum wage expected to be drawn up by the National Wage Council by next month, which will then be submitted to the government.
