Chinese leathergoods brand Shang Xia has received a big boost from being the chosen handbag brand of China’s new First Lady, Peng Liyuan, during some early state visits with her husband, President Xi Jinping.

A former singer, Ms Peng’s chosen look of understated elegance for trips such as one to Moscow early in the new president’s tenure has struck the right note, observers have said, as the Chinese government preaches greater austerity. An logo-less Shang Xia bag in navy blue leather was a fitting accessory.

Shang Xia is often touted as “China’s answer to Hermès”, according to the Financial Times, and was acquired by the French luxury goods group in 2010. The newspaper has said Hermès is planning to open a flagship , led by Jiang Qionger, the daughter of Chinese architect Dong Dayou, who designed the Shanghai museum. The label was acquired by Hermès in 2010 and is planning to open a first international flagship Shang Xia boutique in Paris later this year.
