Somalia: New tanneries planned as part of ‘rebirth’

29/05/2013
The Somali government has announced plans to build tanneries across the country, as well as expand basic services like water and health.

Chinese media agency Xinhua reported that Somali Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohamed Omar addressed investors at a conference in Kenya yesterday to outline opportunities that exist in the nation.

He said his country's “rebirth” has created opportunities in agriculture, transport, energy and fisheries, with foreign direct investment at a high. He added that changes to foreign investment law, waiting to be approved by the assembly, will make it even easier to invest.

"Resumption of peace, stability and democratic governance has opened new business opportunities in Somalia. We have invited the Somali Diaspora and foreigners to come and be part of the nation's rebirth," he said.

Livestock products are the largest export segment while machinery and food products are the main imports.
