Argentina: tanning group fights back in the face of criticism

Buenos Aires-based tanning group Arlei has responded forcefully to criticisms of inadequate environmental practice at one of its tanneries.

Among several plants it runs in different parts of the country, Arlei has a tannery in Campo Quijano in the province of Salta, in north-west Argentina, where it makes vegetable-tanned leather.

Following reports that the authorities in Campo Quijano want to relocate the tannery outside the town, Arlei has issued a strong defence of the plant’s environmental track record. Rather than just accept negative comments on its operation, Arlei has said it will resist the relocation plan.

In comments to local media, human resoures director, Lucas Moliné, said: “There is no pollution from our tannery in Campo Quijano. On the contrary, what we do there is providing environmental benefits because for many years no we have been running an innovative project to biodegrade organic waste from our leather production to make organic compost.”
