PLGMEA fears further falls in leather garment exports

24/05/2013
The Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA) has issued a statement criticising the country’s interim government for increasing the tax burden on exporting companies.

General elections took place in Pakistan on May 11, but the various political parties are still in the process of sorting out which of them will form a government, with a caretaker government in operation since the completion of the previous term in March.

Specifically, the PLGMEA has objected to a proposal from the caretaker government to introduce an emergency budget before the new government can form, with increases in sales and export taxes among the proposals.

Senior PLGMEA officials said taxes were already high and that any increase could compromise their ability to meet overseas orders for leather apparel. They said there was a drop of 15% in export orders in April 2013 compared to March and that they were fearful of further falls.
