Tougher rules at Canadian slaughterhouses

23/05/2013
The Canadian government is to implement tougher rules to deal with the threat of e.coli in slaughterhouses after an incident last year that led to the largest beef recall in Canadian history.

Around 20 people fell sick after eating beef from XL Foods Lakeside in Alberta, a facility which has since been bought by Brazilian tanning and packer company JBS.

Meat packers will have to provide production and distribution information on demand and in a standardised format, and the food standards agency is to increase inspections between now and October.
