ANERT is the name the group has chosen; the acronym stands for the National Assembly of Companies Taken Over By Workers. In other words, the members are businesses that were in grave danger of disappearing before the employees took up ownership and began to run things for themselves.
Mr Mujica is a supporter of the initiative. He said at the meeting, which took place in the town of Nueva Helvecia: “We are all grateful for the chance to earn a living by doing what we do best.”
There were 70 delegates in all, representing 19 companies that, together, employ 1,700 people. Among the companies that took part were the Uruven and Cooperativa El Águila tanneries.
