Italian politician calls for EU action over raw hides
16/05/2013
Mr Morganti complained that shipments of raw material from the EU to tanners in other parts of the world was forcing prices up and leaving European tanners struggling to make ends meet.
“Prices have reached an unsustainable level for European businesses,” Mr Morganti said. “And meanwhile access to raw material on international markets remains extremely difficult because of measures competitor countries have taken to restrict exports of hides and skins. On the international stage, about 50% of all hides and skins are subject to this kind of restriction.”
He said that in 2012, 47% of hides had left the EU raw, with 60% of those going to China.
