Specialty chemicals manufacturer BASF has unveiled its trends report for leather for the autumn-winter 2014-2015 fashion season.

There are three main themes: To Relish, To Enjoy and To Fragment.

To Relish showcases a “cosier, less aggressive fashion line that plays around with masculinity and femininity”. The theme gives an overall “relaxed elegance” with a modern outlook. It uses luxurious materials such as waxed crocodile skin, patent leathers, and leather that exudes sensuality. The use of neutral and buff pastel shades, together with light green, mauve and orange colours dominate.

The second theme, To Enjoy, creates “a folkloric fusion”, that take on a modern form and a multicultural outlook. Leathers, velvet, angora and snakeskin are key inspirations for this theme, interlaced with the use of floral embroidery, patchwork and patent leather. Here, vibrant, strong colours convey optimism, enthusiasm for a young and cool look in the new age of happiness.

Finally,To Fragment embodies a futuristic, high-tech vision with new geometrical shapes that come in blues and greys. There are two underlying sub-themes – Atmosphere and Mystics. In Atmosphere, there is minimalism and a return to basics, to tranquility, reflection, lightness, breezes, where white plays a key role along with greys and black. In Mystics, there is more sophistication, tinted with dark aubergines and blacks, where myth, mystery and magic reveal “unexplored ambiances”, BASF said, through the use of dark lace, and embossed leathers with low-gloss and semi matte effects.

To achieve the desired results, BASF has said its new range of Basyntan and Relugan products will help at the retanning stage, along with its new generation of Densodrin water-repellent agents. To complete the process, there are finishing polyurethanes, such as Astacin Finish PT and Astacin Finish PS, which are free of NMP (N-Methyl-Pyrrolidone) and NEP (N-Ethyl-Pyrrolidone), together with water-based Astacin Top LL.
