New tannery for Kenya
07/05/2013
Charles Sunkuli, the managing director of an inward investment body in the region, told local media that 80% of livestock in this part of Kenya die before reaching major markets such as Nairobi or Nakuru and that the new development, which will also include abattoir facilities, will help farmers achieve maximum profit on the slaughter of their animals.
He said the project would take eight months to complete but that when it is fully operational it will employ 1,000 people directly and indirectly.
As far as the tannery is concerned, he said a first phase of the project would focus on processing local hides and skins to wet blue stage, with leather finishing processes being added at a later date.
