China: 900 arrested for meat-related crimes
03/05/2013
The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said police had uncovered 382 meat-related offenses, and seized more than 20,000 tonnes of illegal products.
Crimes included the production of water-injected meat, the use of chemicals while processing products, as well as the selling of diseased and fake meat. In Wuxi, in east China's Jiangsu Province, suspects made more than $1.6 million selling fake mutton, which was made from fox, mink and rat.
An official from the MPS said the country had “deep-seated” food safety issues and that the arrests are part of a wider crackdown. Police are now focusing on crimes involving dairy products.
