Leather to play a bigger role in Portuguese schools programme

Portugal’s government has said it wants to increase industry-based opportunities in the country to give more students the chance to enter an apprenticeship before formally leaving school. Leather and footwear production are among the industry sectors specifically mentioned by the government as “priority sectors” for playing a more involved role in the skills development of young people.

At present, all students have to stay in full-time education until the age of 18, but the opportunity exists for some students to spend up to 40% of their school timetable with a manufacturing company learning work skills.

The government has increased by more than 40% the target number of students that it wants to take part in what it is calling “double learning”, with their time shared between industry and the classroom.

In 2012, around 140,000 students were completing their school careers in this way, although not all of them were given company-based opportunities to learn. By 2020, the government now says it wants the total to reach 200,000.
