All workers and most hides safe after Tuscan tannery fire

One of the drums in the Gima tannery in Ponte a Egola, part of the tanning cluster around Santa Croce Sull’Arno in Tuscany, caught fire on April 28.

Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to prevent the fire from spreading. No one was hurt and the company was even able to salvage most of the hides that were in the drum at the time.

The authorities said later that it looked as though the motor running the drum had short-circuited, causing the fire.
