Search continues for a buyer for Clariant’s leather business unit

01/05/2013
Specialty chemicals manufacturer Clariant earned CHF 421 million in the first quarter of 2013 from the business units it is in the process of selling, including leather. However, the company did not include these figures in its official first-quarter results, classifying its results from leather and the other business units concerned as “discontinued”.

Official figures for the quarter showed sales of CHF 1.52 billion, an increase of 1% in Swiss francs compared to the same quarter in 2012.

Other parts of Clariant’s business that it has discontinued include textiles, paper and emulsions. It announced at the end of 2012 that US-based investment firm SK Capital has agreed to acquire these strands of the Clariant business. It is preparing to set up a new company called Archroma, which will encompass all three industry sectors.

Clariant said on announcing its first-quarter results that it was still searching for a buyer for its leather business unit, as well as for the detergents and intermediates arm of its business.
