Italian tanners interested in wet blue from Azerbaijan
01/05/2013
Turkish industry commentators have said Italian tanners have turned to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey itself as sources of wet blue and crust owing to the increase in prices for semi-finished leather from more traditional origins, including the US, Brazil and Australia.
A typical scenario would involve hides being tanned to wet blue stage in Azerbaijan and being moved to Turkey for sorting and packaging for shipment to tanners in Italy. The material from Azerbaijan has inferior grain quality and a lower split yield, but buyers in Italy have been attracted by prices that can be 40% cheaper than raw material from main origins.
