An agency of the government of Japan, the Japan Bank of International Cooperation, is providing the funding over a ten-year period to encourage sustainable business in the Latin American country, with a specific focus on financing projects that prevent, control and mitigate the environmental impact of Colombian companies’ operations.
Among the industrial sectors that can qualify for funding are tanneries and water treatment projects. Money will be available to help companies invest in more up-to-date technology and in cleaner processes.
The president of the Banco de Bogotá, Alejandro Figueroa Jaramillo, said in a statement in mid-April: “What we want to do with this resources is support process changes in companies, providing finance for initiatives that minimise carbon emissions. Thanks to the confidence that the Japan Bank of International Cooperation has shown in us, we are able to reaffirm our commitment to preserving natural resources.”
