Uruguay believes animal welfare programme can boost beef exports

Uruguay’s national meat institute INAC wants to include animal welfare as part of its pitch for Uruguayan beef in export markets.

The South American country already makes a point of presenting its beef as coming from pasture-fed cattle that are free from hormone supplements. INAC believes messages emphasising animal welfare will further help it present Uruguayan beef as a high-quality product.

INAC’s idea is to introduce an accreditation system, including detailed audits, that will certify farms, cattle transportation companies and abattoirs for animal welfare. It wants to mark beef from these sources with a new logo to let consumers know that the product came from an animal “whose wellbeing was respected from birth until the point of slaughter”.
