Every year, the UK government gives recognition to companies that have achieved prominence in international trade and hands out awards called the Queen’s Award for Enterprise to the winners.
This year, the Cambridge Satchel Company, which began trading from a kitchen table in 2008, is one of 152 winners. Today, the company now sells its brightly coloured bags in 110 countries. It has turnover of £12 million, of which £5 million comes from overseas trade.
Founder, Julie Deane, has said she came up with the idea to found a satchel company after reading the Harry Potter books with her children and realising that the traditional school satchels pupils have at Harry Potter’s school, Hogwarts, were like the ones she and her classmates had as children, were no longer available.
