Deforestation: Brazilian authorities take action against 26 packers

17/04/2013
The authorities in the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Rondônia have joined forces with the country’s Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to take 26 meat companies to court for allegedly sourcing cattle sourced illegally in Amazon regions.

In papers submitted to court, the authorities said they were suing the 26 packers, mostly small, local operators, for more than $275 million for “damages caused to Brazilian society by their actions”. They said there was a risk the cattle had come from farms that use illegally deforested land, that endanger the culture and traditional lifestyle of indigenous people or that use slave labour.

Such farms operate outside the law, but the authorities have identified them by comparing data on animal slaughter and cattle origin with the details of registered farm locations they have collated using satellite imagery.
