China to cut leather production

China’s ministry of industry and information technology has put an announcement on its official website naming 19 industrial sector, including tanning, on which the government intends to impose production restrictions this year.

According to the announcement, China’s tanners will be asked to produce almost seven million fewer pieces of finished leather than in 2012. The statement on the ministry’s website said that the government wanted to eliminate overcapacity in each of the industrial sectors.

It did not go into any further detail about the individual businesses that would face restrictions.

The move comes at a time when a number of large Chinese tanneries have invested in increasing their capacity to keep up with high demand for leather in the domestic market.
