The controversy of plastics manufacturers misusing the term ‘leather’ when describing the synthetic materials they make to mount a challenge to leather continues.

In a statement to encourage interest in an exhibition for synthetics in Shanghai in May, the China Plastics Processing Industry Association has said that its member companies are responsible for producing 40 billion square-metres per year of plastic materials for which they misuse the name ‘leather’, exporting 25% of this total.

In addition, the association said that China is responsible for producing 80% of this type of material worldwide, putting the annual global total at 50 billion square-metres.
