Zhejiang tanneries forced to close

According to the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), the city’s environmental protection department has ordered the closures because tests on the water quality in a local river found signs of untreated effluent.
Owners may face large fines.
In March, CLIA president, Su Chaoying, said government initiatives to make leather production more environmentally efficient would lead to the closure of hundreds of smaller tanneries across China. He said the measures would affect tanneries with a production capacity of less than 50,000 hides a year if working from raw and of 30,000 hides a year if working from wet blue.
Mr Su also said that tanners are being encouraged to site new-build tanneries in purpose-built leather clusters with common effluent treatment plants.
