Su Chaoying, president of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), held a press conference in early April to announce the official performance figures of the Chinese leather industry in 2012.

In the course of the year, Mr Su said the sector produced material with a value of around $170.3 billion, an increase of 14% on 2011.

He said that 72% of the material Chinese tanners produced last year had gone to domestic customers. Exports to Germany, France, Spain and Italy all fell, by 8.5%, 8.5%, 3.3% and 14.2% respectively. Mr Su described this as confirmation that Chinese tanners have “reduced their reliance” on exports.

Exports to the US, EU and Japan accounted for 53.5% of all industry exports in 2012. One further interesting point is that exports of Chinese leather to African countries increased by 31.8% in 2012 compared to the year before.
