Peru: tanners warned over Trujillo scam

09/04/2013
Tanners and footwear manufacturers in Trujillo, Peru, have been warned about a scam involving false representatives of a new industrial site in the district of El Porvenir.

Companies have been asked by agents claiming to represent the authorities to pay a cash deposit to secure a place at the new industrial site. Luis Yzquierdo, an official from the local authority at El Porvenir, has warned tanners and shoe companies through local media that they should not be fooled by these requests. “The only way to sign up for a place at the new sight is in person and under the supervision of the local authority,” Mr Yzquierdo said.

He confirmed that El Porvenir has set up an executive committee to run the long-awaited project and that an election took place at the start of April to choose industry representatives to work with the committee. He said this constituted good progress, and said manufacturers that meet the financial stability and environmental production requirements will have a chance to sign up for space at the new industrial park in the months ahead.

However, Edmundo Blas Zegarra, president of a tanning industry association in Trujillo, has spoken about the frustration his member companies feel about what they say is a lack of progress. “Tanners in Trujillo meet all the requirements,” he said, “but we have been waiting for three years now for the authorities to hand over the land for the new site.”
