Brazil registers record cattle slaughter for 2012

02/04/2013

Brazil’s official statistics agency, IBGE has confirmed that the country slaughtered 31.1 million head of cattle in 2012, a figure that represents an 8% increase compared to 2011.

This is a record number for Brazil. The previous highest cattle slaughter was in 2007, when abattoirs across the South American country slaughtered 30.7 million head.

According to the statistics agency, there were several reasons for the record slaughter in 2012. There was a reduction in beef prices in Brazil last year, of around 1.5% compared to the previous year. This was at a time when the prices of pork, mutton, poultry eggs and fish increased.
