Government demands mean small tanneries in China will close
25/03/2013
Explaining the development on the opening day of APLF 2013 in Hong Kong, the president of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), Su Chaoying, said the measures would affect tanneries with a production capacity of less than 50,000 hides a year if working from raw and of 30,000 hides a year if working from wet blue.
Mr Su also said that tanners are being encouraged to site new-build tanneries in purpose-built leather clusters with common effluent treatment plants. New-build tanneries must have a capacity of at least 200,000 hides per year if working from raw hides and of 100,000 hides a year if working from wet blue. He said five clusters will be in operation by 2015.
“We do not have the exact numbers, but I think the total number of small tanneries that will have to close will not be more than 300,” he said. “About 120 smaller tanneries in Guangdong Province have already closed, but other tanneries are picking up some of their production so, overall, our production is not down.”
