Export volumes fall in first eight months for Pakistan leather sector

The Pakistan leather industry has recorded exports for the month of February with a value of $72.5 million. This figure represents a decline of 24% from January 2013.

Total exports for the sector for the first eight months of the current financial year, July 2012 to February 2013 had a value of $717.3 million. These values are almost equal to those of the corresponding period a year earlier; they equate to a fall of 0.7%.

From July to February this financial year, Pakistan’s tanners exported 14.9 million square-metres of leather with a combined value of $283 million. This is 5.9% down on the figure for a year earlier in terms of volume. However, in value terms, it shows an increase of 1.7%.

For leathergoods, including leather garments, the decline in value was 2.6%, reaching $364.7 million. Pakistan also exported just over 8 million pairs of shoes, with a value of $69.6 million. This represents an increase of 2.9% in volume, but a fall in value of 0.5%.
