Indonesia considers setting up cattle farm in Australia

The Indonesian government is considering establishing a cattle breeding farm in Australia in a bid to meet the country’s beef target in 2014, after its exports from its southern neighbour were halted in 2011, according to local reports.

State-owned enterprises minister Dahlan Iskan said it only cost $309 to produce a calf in Australia, one-third of the cost in Indonesia, according to the Jakarta Post.

“But the fattening is best done in Indonesia. Increasing the weights of cattle in Indonesia is cheap and quick,” he was reported as saying.

He said the ministry would delegate the running of the farm to state-owned firms such as livestock company Berdikari and agribusiness firm Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia .
