Thailand: Wet salted hide prices rise 250% in two years

18/03/2013
Prices of wet salted hide have increased 250% over the past two years in Thailand, according to local reports.

Tanneries have been warned they must improve production processes to cope with higher costs caused by a shortage of supplies or face going out of business.

Wet salted hide is now traded at a record 58 baht ($2) per kilogramme from 20 baht in 2010 and 48 baht at the end of last year, Somkiaet Bongkotpannarai, president of the Thai Leather Cluster, told the Bangkok Post.

"To cope with the shortage, manufacturers are looking at alternative materials such as polyvinyl chloride and fabrics and using less leather. We're going to import leather from new sources such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Africa," said Mr Somkiaet.
