French veal producers to invest millions in abattoir expansion

18/03/2013
Sobeval, the largest producer of veal in France, has announced that it will invest between EUR two and three million in the course of 2013 and that a large proportion of its hides will be sold to French tanneries for use in making handbags for luxury brands, rather than going for export.

The investment will see the doubling in size of the abattoir's livestock delivery area, to increase the output volume of hides. This will improve its ability to sell raw material to the French tanneries that supply high-end brands such as Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Chief executive, Gilles Gauthier told local media that the plan is to create an area onsite, in which to sort the hides before transportation to the tanneries, as a means of meeting the demands of those clients.

Located in Boulazac in the south-western French region of Dordogne, the abattoir currently processes a total of 4,500 calves per week, sourced from 540 different farmers. Around 90% of these hides used to be exported. Now, Mr Gauthier plans to sell between 80% and 85% domestically. Farmers supplying calves to Sobeval are already making an effort to preserve the quality of the hides, including the treatment against insect damage.
