BASF re-shapes its leather business

François Desné, senior vice-president for leather, commented: “We are re-shaping our business set-up to strengthen our long-term ability to compete in a rapidly changing market environment.”
BASF’s leather chemicals business will concentrate on core technologies for the automotive and premium leather segment. The company views Asia, and in particular China, as the key growth market for the business, which is why it has taken the decision to set up a new global research and development centre in Shanghai. The new centre will be located within the existing BASF Innovation Campus in Shanghai.
The planned measures, which will also affect BASF’s textiles business, will lead to a reduction of about 65 positions globally, including 29 at corporate headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany. In order to support expected growth, for example in China, India and Turkey, the organisation will build up about 23 positions in those markets. BASF expects to complete the planned measures by end of 2014.
